In this seminar we will focus on key issues and considerations faced by food and beverage entrepreneurs in identifying and working with co-manufacturers.
The seminar will include legal, business, quality, and practical perspectives and will cover topics such as co-man agreements, key terms, what to look for in identifying co-mans, red flags, what works and what doesn’t, firsthand experiences, and more.

 

 

 

About the Presenters: 

 

Maggie Craig, Partner DLA Piper 

Maggie Craig is a partner in the Boston office of DLA Piper and focuses her practice on regulatory compliance and litigation matters, with a specific emphasis on food, beverages, dietary supplements, alcohol, and general consumer products.  Her practice spans the product supply chain, including R&D, product development, label and label claims review, supply and distribution agreements, food safety, scientific substantiation, product recalls, and false advertising litigation.  She represents a wide range of clients, from start-ups to multi-nationals, understands the nuances of navigating the dynamic food regulatory landscape, and aims to be a strategic advisor and collaborative partner for her clients.  She has extensive experience advising on FDA, USDA, TTB, and CPSC related regulations, including label compliance, claims risk assessment, import and export issues, FSMA, and supply chain management.  She has international in-house experience, working abroad in Amsterdam, Netherlands as international regulatory and compliance legal counsel for a multi-national food company, and also has a degree in Nutrition & Food Studies from New York University.

 

 

Stefanie Fogel, Partner DLA Piper

Stefanie J. Fogel is Co-Chair of DLA Piper’s Global Consumer Goods, Food and Retail Sector and Co-Chair of the US Food and Beverage sub-sector, focusing her practice on multi-national food and consumer product regulation and compliance, food and consumer product recall response, corporate compliance, and commercial, class action and multi-plaintiff litigation. She represents national and international manufacturers of foods and dietary supplements, retail clothing, manufacturing equipment, chemical products, bio-technology detection devices and a variety of consumer products. Stefanie serves as a national and international advisor to these clients in the area of product safety, cross-border distribution and enforcement, crisis management response, and industry trends. She has extensive experience advising on FDA, USDA, TTB, and CPSC related regulations, including label compliance, claims risk assessment, import and export issues, FSMA, and supply chain management. Stefanie works with large multinationals and start -ups in trending areas of the food and supplement space to include plant based alternatives and hemp based CBD products.

 

 

William Madden Bio, Co-Founder and CEO of Whole Brain Consulting

As a highly respected senior food industry consultant, William Madden brings 20+ years experience in the field of outsourced operations and entrepreneurship to the table. Starting with a degree in business management from Georgia Tech, Madden began his career with five years at Nestlé and five years at Little Lady Foods, working as an account manager. He then invested time learning the ins and outs of the industry first as the director of new business development at Hearthside Food Solutions and later as a key account manager at Fonterra. He founded Right Brain Consulting, utilizing his deep knowledge of the food industry to negotiate contracts between food companies and co-manufacturers, and started a candy company, Dulce Foods, all the while dabbling in the manufacturing and selling of sandwiches and managing the lucrative operation in a handful of hours each week. As Madden’s influence in the industry grew, he merged Right Brain Consulting with BJH Food Safety, which now operates as Whole Brain Consulting.

Whole Brain Consulting, a consulting firm specializing in outsourced operations in the food industry, operates from offices in Chicago and Boulder. From supply chain and operations management to food safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, Whole Brain Consulting utilizes the cumulative expertise of over two dozen industry experts to solve problems for rising food companies. Madden is a renowned thought leader, writer, and presenter recognized for consulting in the rapidly changing food industry partnership between suppliers, co-manufacturers, co-packers and food companies. In addition to authoring “Separating the Con Man From the Co Man: How to Source a Contract Manufacturer,” Madden has contributed to the forward movement of the industry through multiple avenues and has served as an advisor and mentor to emerging food companies.
