Food entrepreneurs have to figure out a lot of rules and regulations, from licensing to inspections to taxes. We will be discussing the fun and exciting world of business licensing for food businesses in Chicago. Do you have a creative business idea that doesn’t seem to fit the mold of the municipal code? Are you wondering how to start legally when you don’t have a restaurant? We will discuss shared kitchen user licenses, pop-up licenses, wholesale licenses, and cottage food/home kitchen laws. This seminar is on-point for early-stage entrepreneurs building out the business model, as well as business owners who want to expand outside their current license category. We will also take time to discuss what changes would make City Hall easier to navigate, so the IJ Clinic can advocate for helpful reforms.

About the presenter:

Beth Kregor is the Director of the IJ Clinic on Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Law School, which provides free legal assistance, support, and advocacy for low-income entrepreneurs. Beth has been a lawyer and a mentor and a fierce advocate for food businesses for many years. Under her leadership, the IJ Clinic has represented clients in the food industry from farm to table, presented conferences for food businesses, and lobbied for legalizing street food and easing the red tape that trips up food businesses.

The Institute for Justice Clinic is a nonprofit dedicated to serving low-income entrepreneurs in Chicago by providing free legal assistance and advocating for legal reforms that benefit small business owners. We also provide educational seminars and prepare University of Chicago Law School students to be lifelong advocates for entrepreneurs.
