ICNC works to strengthen the companies in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor on Chicago's Near West Side. In addition to representing and providing assistance to hundreds of companies in its community, ICNC owns and operates Make City, a small business incubator which houses 100 small business tenants in its 416,000 square foot facility.

ICNC also co-owns The Hatchery, a food and beverage manufacturing incubator in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood which assists food & beverage entrepreneurs grow their businesses. This facility is a one-stop-shop aiming to solve three major challenges in the industry: access to production space, financing, and resources.

POSITION ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Culinary Assistant will provide support to the Culinary Instructor and will be responsible for a wide range of classroom instruction support for Impact Culinary Training. This is a part-time position and reports to the Impact Culinary Instructor.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

INSTRUCTOR & KITCHEN SUPPORT

  • Work with Culinary Instructor on daily plan and execution
  • Assist Culinary Instructor with inventory, thoughtful stewardship and ordering of product
  • Support students as they learn culinary fundamentals
  • Prepare student breakfast and lunch, with guidance from Culinary Instructor
  • Support in daily cleaning and sanitation duties
  • Organize and manage storing of food supplies
  • Promptly transfer meal ingredients from cold/frozen/dry storage areas to the kitchen per instructions
  • Maintain a positive outlook and use patience and kindness in helping instruct the students

PROGRAM SUPPORT

  • Assist Program Manager during recruitment periods and provide administrative support as needed
  • Provide real-world experience anecdotes and tips for success to students entering the culinary industry
  • Participate in preparing for cohort graduation ceremony and other program events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum three years restaurant cooking experience in high-volume establishments
  • Must have Illinois Food Handler Certificate or be eligible to obtain it within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with students, peers, and employers
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Supervisory experience in restaurants is a plus
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, critically problem solve and exercise good judgment with minimal supervision
  • Must work cleanly and efficiently
  • Self-starter that is energetic, creative, proactive, and responsible
  • Great follow-up and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility in work/teaching style to adapt quickly to new projects and meet changing demands
  • Exercise exceptional time management skills
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations
  • Bilingual in English & Spanish is a PLUS
  • Basic computer skills

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Hatchery: much time will be spent in a state of the art culinary kitchen and classroom environment.  All classes are during the day and with prolonged periods of standing. The noise level in work environment is usually moderate.

POSITION STRUCTURE & BENEFITS INCENTIVES

  • This is a 32-hour per week position; Monday-Friday, primarily 7:30am-2pm; with the ability to work remote 0% of work week
  • Starting hourly range is $18-$20, commensurate with experience
